Retaining the warm medicated oil over the painful knee joint for certain period is known by the name Janubasti. This is a form of snigdhasveda and is achieved by pouring warm oil into a frame prepared on the surface of the knee joint. Janubasti is proved effective in conditions like osteoarthrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other painful conditions of the knee. The prescription of medicated oil for the therapy is similar to the katibasti.

Janubasti may be carried out at four different locations over the knee joint. The supine position of the client with knee extended is ideal for treating the interior of the knee joint. The popliteal area is subjected to janubasti in the prone position of the client with the knee extended. Medial or lateral aspect of the knee joint may be treated with janubasti in the lateral position of the client with the knee partially flexed. The location of the janubasti to be carried out is determined corresponding to the site of pain. After positioning the client for the therapy a frame is made over the knee joint by using the paste of black gram. The joint between the frame and skin is properly sealed. Warm medicated oil is poured into this frame, and the knee is massaged gently by dipping the thumb in the oil. This causes the svedana effect in the knee joint. After certain period the oil and the frame are removed, the knee is then subjected to massage and fomentation. Massage is done in circular fashion covering the whole aspect of the knee joint. The observation of the client and management after the treatment is similar to katibasti.
